NHS Wales sign-in is changing from 23 January 2025

NHS Wales e-Library is enhancing the sign-in process for NHS Wales users to strengthen cybersecurity, in line with NHS Wales, by utilising multi-factor authentication (MFA). Some users might already be familiar with MFA through its use on other NHS Wales systems and when opening new Edge or Chrome browser sessions. It’s also become common practice with most companies on the internet, and so you might be familiar with it from using it outside of work too.

From 23 January 2025, the screen where users enter their email address and password will change and be replaced with the following MFA route:

Users with NHS Wales email addresses use their email address and network password to sign-in to access e-resources subscribed to by the e-Library.

From 23 January 2025:

  • If you are using an NHS Wales issued device, and the Microsoft Edge browser, you will no longer need to sign in. This is because resources will be able to detect who you are from you being logged in to your work device.

If you are not using an NHS Wales device, or using an alternative web browser, such as Google Chrome, the steps to log in will change, and so we’ve included screenshots below to demonstrate this user journey:

If you are presented with this screen when trying to access e-Library e-resources:

Type in your NHS Wales email address and select “Next.”

An “Enter Password” window will appear, this time with the NHS Wales logo:

Type in your NHS Wales network password – the same one you use to sign into networked devices and systems.

Once your password is entered, press “Sign In” and you will be taken to an approval message.

Use your ‘Authenticator App’ to enter the number provided and complete the process.

The app is available to download for android and apple devices and uses multi-factor authentication to keep our NHS Wales IT systems more secure from cyber threats.

FAQs

I do not have an NHS Wales email address. Does this affect me?

No, if you do not have an NHS Wales email address, you will not be impacted by MFA. Please continue to sign in as you always have done.

How is this affecting signing into e-resources?

Previously the sign in screen would appear as a blue and white screen, with the NHS Wales logo, and boxes to enter your NHS Wales email and network password:

From January 2025, you will now be presented with the above MFA process if you are using a personal device or a browser other than Microsoft Edge on an NHS Wales device. You do not need to be connected to an NHS Wales networked device to access the e-resources, but you will need access to the Microsoft Authenticator app which is free to download.

I’ve never needed to use an Authenticator App. I don’t have anything like that with my NHS Wales account. What do I do?

Contact your Health Board, Trust or Special Health Authority IT ServiceDesk.

What do I do if I have a problem with signing in?

If you experience any issues or difficulties using MFA, please report them to your Health Board, Trust or Special Health Authority IT ServiceDesk. The e-Library cannot resolve any issues with your NHS Wales account.

When reporting your issue to your local IT ServiceDesk please ensure you state that the issue you are encountering is with your NHS Wales account and provide screenshots to avoid the enquiry being sent to the e-Library team.

If you have any issues that are specific to the e-Resources, for example they are not working as expected, please continue to report these instances to the e-Library team at elibrary@wales.nhs.uk.
